Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD)

Library of Tools

This is a digital library of tools for downstream and upstream companies in the palm oil sector to adopt a Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) approach in their own operations and supply chains.

The HRDD concept is defined by the United Nations Guiding Principles (UNGPs) on Business and Human Rights as:

An ongoing management process that a company needs to implement in order to identify, prevent, mitigate and account for how companies address their adverse human rights impacts.”

This library contains a selection of publicly available tools that can support companies in the HRDD process. It is not a comprehensive repository of all guidance and tools on HRDD. The resources included in the library are chosen because they are UNGP-aligned HRDD tools with practical components, such as guidance questions, checklists, indicators or other instrument. The tools are developed by various organisations to support companies in the implementation of one, more or all steps of the HRDD process.

Some tools included were not developed specifically for the palm sector but could be used by companies in the sector. Some of the tools have a specific thematic focus (e.g. gender, labour, children, indigenous people and local communities) with a dedicated icon.

The library is articulated around the four steps of the HRDD process and tools that comprehensively support all steps as described in the UNGPs. The library is structured in the following 5 sections:

  1. Tools to Identify

The tools in this section provide resources for companies to identify actual and potential adverse human rights impacts

  2. Tools to Address & Embed

The tools in this section are resources for companies to address the identified impacts and embed human rights considerations into existing processes, systems and departments

  3. Tools to Track

The tools in this section are resources for companies to monitor the effectiveness of the actions taken to understand if adverse human rights impacts are being addressed

  4. Tools to Communicate

The tools in this section are resources for companies to communicate on the actions being taken to address the risks and impacts, and the effectiveness of those actions.

  5. Comprehensive HRDD Tools

The tools in this section are resources for companies to identify, address, embed, track and communicate actual and potential adverse human rights impacts or tools that encompass virtually all steps.

Companies or organizations developing tools about HRDD are welcome to get in touch to share or recommend resources which they consider might be a good fit for this library of tools. Please contact us at info@proforest.net or complete this form if you have any feedback or suggestions.
