Introduction

The Implementation Reporting Framework (IRF) is being developed to provide a tool for companies to monitor and understand progress with implementation of NDPE policy commitments across the entire production base connected to their supply chain. This will allow targeted action where there are issues and ongoing reporting on progress.

Currently the tool has been developed for the No Deforestation and No Expansion on Peat components of NDPE and is fully rolled out amongst companies who have adopted it. IRF profiles have been actively requested throughout the whole supply chain. Work on the No Exploitation component of the IRF is under development. The initial scope has two distinct templates: one for reporting on land, indigenous peoples’ and local communities’ rights, and one on labour rights. The first data verification protocol for the No Deforestation and No Expansion on Peat IRF is available on the IRF website. There are companies already getting their IRF profile data verified.

Who is involved?

An active working group (AWG) of nearly 30 companies from different stages of the palm oil supply chain together with implementing partners (practitioners) meet bi-monthly to work on the practical development of the tool. Other stakeholders provide input on the development of the tool, either directly or through the work of other working groups under the POCG.

Coordinated by Proforest.

Objectives

  1. Roll out reporting on profiles for No Deforestation and No Expansion on Peat through supply chains

  2. Improve the tools and guidance to support uptake

  3. Develop and launch a data verification protocol

  4. Further develop and deploy the approach for No Exploitation, including piloting and rolling out the templates for land rights and labour rights and getting feedback from expert organisations and practitioners

  5. Develop and implement strategy for engaging mills which have been unengaged or lower performers according to IRF categories

Further information

Open to companies and practitioners (organisations supporting companies with their NDPE implementation).

Stakeholders (e.g. NGOs) are regularly updated on the activities of the working group and periodically invited to provide input on tool development, but are not part of the AWG.

IRF AWG members PepsiCo, Cargill and Musim Mas are featured in this short film, co-created with Proforest, to explain why the NDPE Implementation Reporting Framework is such an important tool in meeting commitments on the ground.  Take a look to hear how downstream, midstream and upstream companies are using the NDPE IRF as a universal, shared language to understand what is required to deliver NDPE commitments, monitor progress, identify action and drive improvement.
